San Siro — The Brutalist Temple of Milanese Football
Stadio Giuseppe Meazza is the shared home of rivals AC Milan and Inter Milan, famous for its spiral towers and raw concrete architecture.
A House Divided, A Pitch Shared
Opened in 1926 as the private ground of AC Milan, San Siro was purchased by the city in 1935 and became the shared home of both AC Milan and Inter Milan in 1947. In 1980, the stadium was officially renamed Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, in honor of the legendary forward who played for both Milanese clubs.
The stadium is the site of the famous Derby della Madonnina. When AC Milan plays at home, the stadium is bathed in red and black; when Inter Milan hosts, it transforms into blue and black. This shared tenancy has created one of the most intense, theatrical stadium atmospheres in football.
The Concrete Towers of Italia '90
San Siro's current iconic appearance is the result of a massive renovation undertaken for the 1990 FIFA World Cup. Architects Giancarlo Ragazzi and Enrico Hoffer added a third tier to three sides of the stadium, supported by eleven massive cylindrical concrete towers.
Four of these towers at the corners support the massive red girder roof structure. The spiraling pedestrian ramps on the towers have become a key visual feature, offering a dramatic view of fans walking up to the upper tiers. The raw, brutalist concrete structure feels like a medieval fortress rising over Milan.
The Looming Threat of Demolition
Despite its legendary status, San Siro faces significant structural challenges. The lack of modern corporate hospitality suites and restricted accessibility have prompted both AC Milan and Inter Milan to explore the construction of a new, separate stadium in Milan.
While local heritage commissions and fans have campaigned to preserve San Siro as a historic monument, the future of the Meazza remains uncertain. It is scheduled to host the opening ceremony of the 2026 Winter Olympics, but its long-term survival beyond the decade is not guaranteed.
