Anfield — The Emotional Cathedral of Merseyside
Home to Liverpool FC since 1892, Anfield is globally famous for the Kop stand and the chilling anthem "You'll Never Walk Alone."
A Sanctuary of Football History
Anfield opened in 1884 and was originally rented by Everton FC, who played there until a rent dispute prompted them to move to Goodison Park in 1892. Following Everton's departure, stadium owner John Houlding formed Liverpool FC to play in the vacant ground, initiating a historic tenancy.
Anfield's history is defined by the legendary manager Bill Shankly, who took over the club in 1959 and established the "Anfield Boot Room" — a meeting room where coaches debated tactics. Shankly also installed the famous "This Is Anfield" sign in the player tunnel to intimidate opponents.
The Legendary Spion Kop
The most famous stand at Anfield is the Spion Kop, commonly known simply as the Kop. Named after a hill in South Africa where a local regiment suffered heavy casualties during the Boer War, the stand was historically a massive concrete terrace holding over 28,000 standing fans.
Following the Taylor Report in 1994, the Kop was converted into an all-seater stand with a capacity of 12,000. Despite the seating, the stand remains the heart of Liverpool's support. On matchdays, the Kop is covered in hand-painted flags, banners, and scarves, creating a sea of red.
Modernizing a Classic Ground
To increase capacity without moving from their historic site, Liverpool embarked on major expansions in 2016 and 2024. The Main Stand was rebuilt with a massive three-tier structure, adding 8,500 seats and modern corporate boxes, followed by the expansion of the Anfield Road Stand.
These projects expanded Anfield's capacity to over 61,000 while maintaining the stadium's traditional close-to-the-pitch character. The design preserved the historic Shankly Gates and the Hillsborough Memorial, which commemorates the fans who lost their lives in the 1989 disaster.
