Munich's Glowing Cushion

Designed by Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron, the Allianz Arena is the first stadium in the world with a fully color-changing exterior. The facade is constructed from 2,874 ETFE plastic foil panels, inflated with dry air and illuminated by energy-efficient LED panels.

The stadium glows solid red for Bayern Munich home matches, white for the German national team, and can display complex multicolored patterns. Because of its pillow-like panel shapes, locals have affectionately nicknamed the arena "Schlauchboot" (The Dinghy).

History & Ownership

The Modern fortress of FC Bayern

Opened in 2005 to replace Munich's historic Olympiastadion, the arena was originally a joint project between FC Bayern Munich and TSV 1860 Munich. Bayern Munich purchased 1860 Munich's share in 2006 for €11 million, becoming the sole owners of the world-class facility.

The Allianz Arena has hosted major events including the 2006 FIFA World Cup matches (including the opening game) and the dramatic 2012 UEFA Champions League Final ("Finale Dahoam"), where Chelsea defeated Bayern Munich on penalties inside their own stadium.
