Johan Cruyff Arena — Amsterdam’s High-Tech Pioneer
Home to Ajax Amsterdam, this innovative arena pioneered retractable roof designs and serves as a testing ground for smart stadium tech.
Pioneering the Retractable Roof
Opened in 1996 as the Amsterdam Arena, the stadium was renamed the Johan Cruyff Arena in 2018 in honor of the legendary Ajax and Dutch football icon. The arena's most significant design feature is its retractable roof, composed of two massive 400-ton panels that can slide open or closed in 20 minutes.
At the time of its opening, it was the first stadium in Europe to feature a retractable roof. This pioneering design was not without challenges: the lack of airflow and natural sunlight in the early years severely damaged the grass, forcing the stadium to replace the pitch multiple times a year.
A Living Smart City Lab
The Johan Cruyff Arena functions as a live testing ground for smart city and sustainability technologies. The stadium is powered by a massive 3-megawatt energy storage system, composed of 148 recycled Nissan Leaf electric vehicle batteries, which store electricity from solar panels on the roof.
This battery system provides backup power for the entire stadium during matches, reducing reliance on the city grid. The venue also utilizes advanced turf sensor systems that track soil temperature, humidity, and light levels, ensuring optimal grass growth without chemical fertilizers.
The Historic Fortress of Ajax
The stadium is the home of Ajax Amsterdam, one of Europe's most successful historical clubs. The interior of the stadium is decorated with murals of Johan Cruyff and other Ajax legends, and the seating tiers are colored in the club's signature red and white.
Matchdays are characterized by a highly passionate, musical atmosphere, with fans singing the club's anthem, "Mijn Club," and local Amsterdam folk songs. The onsite Ajax Gallery of Fame showcases Champions League trophies, Eredivisie plates, and historic jerseys.
