A Monument of Classical Stone

Built for the 1936 Summer Olympics, the Olympiastadion is a monumental stone structure designed by architect Werner March. Constructed from natural Franconian shell limestone, the stadium preserves its classical layout, including the famous Marathon Gate that breaks the circular stadium ring.

The stadium is historically significant as the site of Jesse Owens' four Olympic gold medals in 1936. Because of its architectural status, the building is classified as a protected monument. Any modernization must respect and preserve the historic stone facade and structural footprint.

The Floating Translucent Roof

For the 2006 FIFA World Cup, the stadium underwent a massive €242 million renovation. The primary addition was a floating steel roof structure, designed by Gerkan, Marg and Partners. The roof weighs 3,500 tons and is supported by 20 slender steel columns inside the seating tiers.

The inner edge of the roof is covered in a translucent membrane that allows sunlight to reach the pitch, while the outer section is covered in solid panels. The roof features a prominent gap above the Marathon Gate, preserving the historic view of the nearby Bell Tower from the stadium bowl.

The Blue Track & Hertha BSC

The Olympiastadion is the official home of Bundesliga club Hertha BSC. The pitch is surrounded by a distinctive blue running track, matching Hertha's club colors. While some fans prefer pure football stadiums, the track is preserved to host major athletics events, including the 2009 World Athletics Championships.

It is also the permanent host of the DFB-Pokal (German Cup) Final, held here every May since 1985. The cup final is the highlight of the German domestic calendar, filling the historic stadium with a festive atmosphere of fans from across the country.
