Camp Nou — The Cathedral of Catalan Football
The largest stadium in Europe, Camp Nou is a legendary coliseum of football and the emotional heart of FC Barcelona.
The Soul of FC Barcelona
Opened in 1957 to replace Barcelona’s old Camp de Les Corts, Camp Nou has served as the stage for some of the most celebrated players in football history, including Johan Cruyff, Diego Maradona, Ronaldinho, and Lionel Messi.
The stadium's name simply translates to "New Field." In 2023, FC Barcelona embarked on the ambitious Espai Barça project, temporarily relocating to the Olympic Stadium in Montjuïc while Camp Nou undergoes a complete structural overhaul, expanding capacity and adding a modern roof.
Espai Barça: The Next Generation
The ongoing €1.45 billion renovation of Camp Nou is set to transform the stadium into a state-of-the-art facility. The project will expand seating capacity to 105,000, making it the second-largest association football stadium in the world. A massive 36,000 square meter flexible roof will cover all seats, protecting fans from weather.
Crucially, the stadium will incorporate ecological upgrades, including 18,000 solar panels to power the venue, rainwater recycling systems, and a 360-degree interior video screen, while preserving the historic second-tier concrete facade designed by Francesc Mitjans.
More Than a Club
The words "Més que un club" (More than a club) are emblazoned across the lateral stand. For Catalonia, Camp Nou has long functioned as a vital sanctuary for cultural and political expression, particularly during historical periods of political censorship.
On matchdays, the stadium comes alive with vibrant mosaic displays and 100,000 fans singing the "Cant del Barça." The onsite Barça Museum is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Catalonia, showcasing European cups and Ballon d'Or trophies.
